Exploring Diversity in Technological History

Grants for Presenters at the Albuquerque SHOT meeting

The SHOT Special Interest Group EDITH (Exploring Diversity in Technological History) announces its new conference award, available for the first time for the 2015 conference of the Society for the History of Technology [SHOT]. The purpose of the award is to encourage presentations that connect the history of technology to the scholarly discussion of diversity, in its wide array of meanings, at SHOT’s annual meeting.

EDITH invites applications from scholars presenting topics or perspectives underrepresented in SHOT as well as from individuals who can contribute to the annual meeting’s geographic and cultural diversity.

For more information on the SHOT 2015 meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from October 8-11 see here.

Eligibility for the EDITH Conference Award is open to individuals who are giving a paper at the SHOT annual meeting. Priorities for the EDITH award include supporting scholars, including graduate students, who are non-US, non-Western, or who are new to SHOT, belong to a group underrepresented in SHOT, and/or whose paper addresses some aspect of the history of technology and diversity, defined broadly to include aspects of gender, race, ethnicity, age, other differences, or other interpretations of diversity.

Grants are normally for $250, with the possibility of additional funds depending on an applicant’s stated need, the number of applications, and on EDITH’s resources.  The grant is presented in the form of a check at the annual meeting. The winner(s) will also be honored as our guest(s) at the annual EDITH gathering. Preference will be given to those who have not received an EDITH travel grant in the past.

The EDITH Conference Award is designed to help defray some of the costs associated with presenting a paper at the SHOT annual meeting – in particular, lodging, meals, and other incidental expenses.  We encourage applicants to also consider applying for a SHOT travel grant, which is a larger program intended to help cover the more substantial costs of airfare and basic conference registration. SHOT travel grants are particularly intended for graduate students, independent scholars, and young professionals just beginning their careers, as well as SHOT International Scholars. Eligible members residing outside the US, Canada, and Western Europe are especially encouraged to apply. For more information on SHOT travel grants, please see: http://www.historyoftechnology.org/about_us/travel_grants.html

Applicants may also wish to consider applying for a travel grant from EDITH’s sister SHOT interest group, WITH (Women In Technological History) – for details on who is eligible, see: http://www.historyoftechnology.org/news/with_travel_grant_shot_meeting_in_albuquerque_2015_.html

Please note that while you may submit applications for both an EDITH grant and a WITH grant in the same year, an applicant will only receive one or the other for the same meeting, since the two programs overlap in being designed to cover the same types of expenses (lodging, etc.).  However, you are allowed to receive both an EDITH Conference Grant and a SHOT travel grant in the same year, since those programs are intended to cover different types of expenses.

To apply, please send a cover letter and brief budget that outlines anticipated expenses and support associated with your trip to Albuquerque (including any grants or funding you have already received), along with an abstract of your proposed paper with evidence that it has been accepted by the SHOT program committee, and a one-page curriculum vitae.  All application materials should be forwarded to the chair of the award committee, Amy Bix, at abix@iastate.edu- you may also contact Dr. Bix by email with any questions. The application deadline for the EDITH Conference Award is August 1, 2015.
