Tour Program: Organized Tours

Our colleagues of the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) of the University of Luxembourg offer a number of interesting tours to discover the immediate surroundings, Luxembourg, and its industrial heritage.

Please note: If the minimum number of participants for a tour is not reached, we will be forced to cancel the tour. In that case, the paid tour fees will, of course, be refunded.

Encounter with Tamiko Thiel: Exploring Digital Art and Technology

Join us for a unique session dedicated to the pioneering work of Tamiko Thiel, a leading figure in the field of digital and augmented reality art. This encounter will offer participants the opportunity to discover her artistic approach and universe, where technology and creativity converge and to create a dialogue between art and history of technology.

Combined Tour of the Blast Furnace and the City of Sciences

Explore the Belval site – the City of Sciences -, known for the diversity and quality of its contemporary architectural achievements, which perfectly interact with the impressive industrial heritage. During the visit, the guide will explain the overall concept encompassing both the conservation and enhancement of the blast furnaces as well as the development of the City of Sciences, the brand new urban district of Belval.

You will also be able to discover the operation of the only Blast Furnace open for visits in Luxembourg. It is located near the Belval Campus. At the heart of its impressive enclosure, the guide will explain the process of manufacturing cast iron and steel.

Please note:
These were originally two separate tours. Due to maintenance work on the blast furnace, the visit to the blast furnace had to be shortened. Therefore, we combined the tours.

Guided Tour Casemates Fort Lambert

The casemates are a fascinating series of tunnels running for several kilometres beneath the old town district of Luxembourg City, even extending as far as the Kirchberg plateau. The casemates in Luxembourg are a national treasure and a source of pride. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. You will discover the casemates in a 2 hour guided tour. The bus will depart from the conference venue.

World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte (Full Day Tour)

The Völklinger Hütte is the world’s only fully preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation, and is also the first industrial monument of this era to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visitors will find it a highly exciting and fascinating place where past, present and future meet in a variety of ways. Find out more on the Völklinger Hütte here.

This is a full day tour. The bus will depart at 8.30 AM at the conference venue. Travel time to the Völklinger Hütte is 2 hours. During a two-hour guided tour, you’ll explore the site. Afterward, you’re free to explore on your own. Lunch is not included. Lunch opportunities are available at the museum. The bus back to Belval will depart at 2.30 PM.

With over 10 million visitors since its creation, the world-famous photo exhibition “The Family of Man” is a legend in the history of photography. Created by Edward Steichen and presented for the first time in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it is considered a manifesto for peace and human equality, expressed through post-war humanist photography. The collection consists of a total of 503 photographs by 273 photographers from 68 countries. After travelling through more than 150 museums worldwide, the last complete version of “The Family of Man” is housed as a permanent exhibition at Clervaux Castle since 1994. Since 2003 it figures on the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage list.

The bus will depart at 10.00 AM from the conference venue in Belval. Arrival in Clervaux at noon. The guided tour will start at 1 PM. The bus back to Belval will depart at 3.30 PM, arrival in Belval at 5.30 PM. Lunch is not included, lunch opportunities are available at the museum.
