Suvobrata Sarkar (India)
Suvobrata Sarkar is an Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Burdwan University, West Bengal. Educated at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and Visva-Bharati, his research interest is the social history of technology in South Asia. Earlier he published a monograph, The Quest for Technical Knowledge: Bengal in the Nineteenth Century (New Delhi: Manohar, 2012). His doctoral study primarily concerned with the correlation between technological expertise and industrial performance, whereas the development and assimilation of emerging technology of the time, i.e. electricity, have been covered at length in the context of early twentieth century Bengal. He has published research articles in the scholarly journals Indian Economic & Social History Review, Archiv Orientalni, Harvard Asia Quarterly, Indian Historical Review, Social Scientist, and Indian Journal of History of Science, and contributed chapters in several edited volumes. Currently Dr. Sarkar is working on the manuscript of his second book. He is also working on the theme—Electrification of British India—his next major research project.
